Native[3] to northern parts of the Amazon basin[4] in Colombia, Peru and Brazil including lower parts of the ríos Putumayo, Trombetas, Negro, Xingu, Tocantins, Capim and Branco River[5] plus the Essequibo drainage in Guyana. It has also been introduced to Singapore and is apparently thriving there.

Inhabits lowland parts of river[6] basins and often enters flooded savannah or forest during the wet season.

Around 200 mm.

A tank[7] with a base[8] footprint of 150 cm x 45 cm is just about acceptable for a pair[9] but a significantly larger tank[10] would be needed for a group.
